Targa Florio & Pergusa Track                                                                                                                    Camera Used: Cosina CT 1G with Agfa APX

The Liege-Targa-Liege was an endurance challenge for kitcars and specials in late summer 1999. It started in Spa near Liege Belgium, and took us, the competitors, south, through France and Italy to Sicily and the Targa Florio road race circuit from the 50's and 60's. We then had to return to Spa. 58 cars started the challenge, 38 finished. Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured during the event. This page covers what was for a lot of us the main event of the trip.

The Targa Florio, this is what a lot of us had come for. I love the 40's, 50's & 60's period of motorsport. This is one of the arenas where the likes of Moss and Fangio did battle. Now, I was going to drive the same route they had driven all those years ago. I had a 135 HP race prep'ed Westfield in my hands for it and various groups of enthusiastic Scilians around the circuit to cheer us on. The A339 from Alton to Basingstoke will never be quite the same, though the road surface is definitely better. The Targa route was a shadow of it's former self with earthquake size cracks in parts of the tarmac, still it all added to the excitment, as did the large untethered cow with big horns lurking around one of the corners.

Following the excitment of the Targa, the following day we went off to the Pergusa race track for some proper black top racing circuit action. The urge to go for it was tempered by the thought that we still had to get the cars back to the finish 3,500 km away.
